Breast Milk Linked to Improved White Matter in Preemies

One in 10 infants born in the United States is born prematurely – prior to 37 weeks’ gestation – according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, leaving surviving preemies at heightened risk for neurodevelopmental disabilities that often do not fully emerge until they enter school. Children’s National Health System researchers intently study infants’ developing brains, looking for biological clues to distinguish vulnerable preemies in order to provide interventions that lower the risk of developing lifelong injuries.
