A Big Blast is giving children with special needs the opportunity to serve as cheerleaders at two Carmel Catholic High School football games.

The organization, which offers occupational and physical therapy for children with special needs, has offered therapy through its gymnastics programs since its inception in 2009. Programs are currently held at gymnastics facilities in Mundelein, Lake Forest and Gurnee. The Glenview-based organization was founded by Rhonda Penzell.

In addition to gymnastics lessons, the organization will kick off a series of new programs this fall, beginning with Buddy Cheer Camp in Mundelein and Gurnee, slated to begin today (Sept. 2) and Tuesday (Sept. 7) respectively. Buddy Cheer Camp will go from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursdays at The Gym Spot, 915 Tower Road, in Mundelein and 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesdays at Ultimate Gymnastics, 1018 Tri-State Parkway, in Gurnee.

"It's really the beginning of our recreations-based programs we're starting," Penzell said.

Cheer camp participants will team with members of the cheerleading squads from Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein and Grayslake Central High School to learn cheers, simple mounts and school spirit. During the camps, A Big Blast students and the high school cheerleaders will practice routines to showcase during the Oct. 1 and Oct. 15 football games at Carmel Catholic High School.
