North Carolina Proposes Cuts To Speech Therapy

Greensboro, NC -- Parents who depend on Medicaid for their child's speech therapy are at risk of losing the service.

Proposed cuts to the health and human services budget would save nearly $15.6 million, but it would affect more than 25,000 children.

Therapy sessions like this one are making a difference for six-year-old Aaron Horsley.

For six months, Annette and Steve Horsley have been taking Aaron to see Michaela Greene of the Speech Center in Winston-Salem.

Medicaid pays for Aaron's therapy.

Steve Horsley works three jobs to pay for everything else the family needs.

If Medicaid is discontinued, there's no other insurance to cover Aaron.

"He won't get the therapy he needs because we cannot with Steve doing three jobs and me and the boys there's no way we can afford it," explained Annette.

The proposed elimination of services would also affect 2,600 therapist jobs.

A state speech and language therapists group asks legislators to consider a more balanced approach in dealing with the deficit.
