Emotional Development of Infants and Young Children: Exploring First Feelings - DVD

< Back to Previous Page

Using actual footage of parents and caregivers interacting with their young children, this video, with Stanley Greenspan, M.D. illustrates milestones in the emotional development of infants and toddlers.

The emphasis of the program is prevention and aims to promote the mental health of infants and young children.

This video enables the viewer to help a baby begin to develop healthy relationships with others by recognizing the infant's first feelings and responding to the baby's cues. It allows parents and caregivers to translate their hunches and questions about their child's emotions into "active" care giving.

Six overlapping stages of healthy emotional development are identified showing a parent or caregiver providing a supportive environment for each stage.

The video will help parents, child-care workers, and health professionals understand the infant's and toddler's emotional capabilities and interests so they can work together to create the supportive and interactive environment each baby and parent needs.

The video is based on the work of Stanley Greenspan, M.D. and his colleagues at the National Institute of Mental Health.
