An Adventure of a Lifetime! My Alaska Year Through PediaStaff

Editor’s Note: We recently reached out to our pediatric therapy contractors who traveled to Alaska to work in their chosen field through PediaStaff.   We got back some wonderful responses, but Susan Buchanan’s was so fantastic, we just had to print her response  in its entirety.    Thank you so much Susan for sharing your beautiful experience!

My Alaska Year
by Susan Buchanan

My Alaska Year – WOW!  I cannot say enough about how much I relished every minute!  Working in Anchorage (or any part of Alaska) made the experience even more meaningful because I was a part of what makes Alaska unique.

It truly is a “melting pot” of diversity in cultures, languages, riches and suffering.  There were hikes, kayaking, train trips, animal safaris (on the cold side), villages to visit, natives, transplants (people) and “newbies” – like me.  The inexhaustible number of trails, the early morning and late afternoon moose visits around the parks and in my neighborhood were delightful and always made my heart smile.  Listening to the birds, watching the bears (from afar), exploring the rivers for pools of salmon (I thought they were all salmon:-), all the wildlife adventures heightened my ardor for taking care of this beautiful land and it’s people.

Learning to explore no matter what the weather – just change your clothes to match your needs- widened my abilities and appreciation for adapting to what is available, what I can change and what I can accept.

Watching the children play at recess – rolling down snow covered hills (every school has a hill), listening to different languages (There were 79 different languages in my school.), Traveling to different areas in this huge state and engaging in the city and village festivities, arts and markets allowed me to revel in the pride of Alaska’s history and reach for the future.  I was so grateful for the time I spent with the children, their parents, my colleagues and the city.  It was a learning adventure every day!

Oh, yes – GO – LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH, AND LEARN in Alaska!
