Silenced by herself… the little girl who chooses not to speak

Sitting side by side on a pedalo, John Stanford and his granddaughter Red Jolley, nine, splash about on a boating lake near his Yorkshire home. As he chatters and tells silly jokes, the youngster smiles but remains eerily silent.

John has never heard his only grandchild speak, even though he knows that she can, and will talk to her parents Carrie and David, both 35.
